{"id":1678,"date":"2023-02-27T07:22:07","date_gmt":"2023-02-27T11:22:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/?p=1678"},"modified":"2023-02-27T07:22:08","modified_gmt":"2023-02-27T11:22:08","slug":"nonpartisan-primary-elections-limit-ballot-access","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/2023\/02\/27\/nonpartisan-primary-elections-limit-ballot-access\/","title":{"rendered":"Nonpartisan Primary Elections Limit Ballot Access"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Alaska&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elections.alaska.gov\/RCV.php\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.elections.alaska.gov\/RCV.php\">Nonpartisan Pick One Primary Election<\/a> may seem like a good idea on the surface, but when held up to the light for further examination, one begins to see the anti-democratic underpinning of this novel idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Alaska&#8217;s Division of Elections FAQ, they make it clear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Can a candidate with no party affiliation still run in the general election by petition?<\/strong><\/p><p>No. Under the new law, <strong><em>the nominating petition process no longer allows for candidates to run in the general election using the nominating petition process.<\/em><\/strong> If a candidate did not appear on the primary election ballot or was not successful in advancing to the general election, they may run as an official write-in candidate as long as they file a letter of intent at least 5 days prior to the general election.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Why would Alaska want to limit ballot access to four individuals?  Especially during today&#8217;s electoral political climate and increased interest in the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With today&#8217;s voting technology, a ballot with many choices is read, submitted, and processed.
