{"id":381,"date":"2014-04-27T13:09:46","date_gmt":"2014-04-27T13:09:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/?p=381"},"modified":"2014-05-03T13:55:40","modified_gmt":"2014-05-03T13:55:40","slug":"bikelala-planning-and-cognitive-dissonance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/27\/bikelala-planning-and-cognitive-dissonance\/","title":{"rendered":"#bikelala, Planning, and Cognitive Dissonance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In April 27th&#8217;s\u00a0Sunday paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/davebangert\">Dave Bangert<\/a> writes\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jconline.com\/story\/opinion\/columnists\/dave-bangert\/2014\/04\/26\/bangert-cyclist-crashes-blame\/8209069\/\">Drivers, cyclists and a mirror of shared blame<\/a>, discussing\u00a0the recent APC study regarding <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tippecanoe.in.gov\/egov\/documents\/1396985526_20151.pdf\">bicycle crashes in Tippecanoe County from 2007 &#8211; 2012<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The report is a good reference point with statistics, maps, and suggestions. \u00a0Crashes are denoted by time of day, weather conditions, etc.<\/p>\n<p>In this particular map (page 18), it shows the location of the crashes and their density by color.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/APC-Bicycle-Crash-Map-2014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-382\" src=\"http:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/APC-Bicycle-Crash-Map-2014.jpg\" alt=\"APC-Bicycle-Crash-Map-2014\" width=\"406\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The report does not state if the cyclist had proper gear on their bicycle. \u00a0For instance, I cannot find the words\u00a0<em>bell, whistle, siren, or audible\u00a0<\/em>in the report.<\/p>\n<p>In my own riding, I find that, during daylight hours, my bell is the most important piece of equipment on my bicycle.<\/p>\n<p>Per <a href=\"http:\/\/www.in.gov\/legislative\/ic\/code\/title9\/ar21\/ch11.html\">Title\u00a09 of the Indiana Code<\/a>, a bicycle should have something that makes noise that is not a siren or whistle. \u00a0Yelling also does not count, however, communicating\u00a0<em>On your left!<\/em> is helpful and respectful.<\/p>\n<p><b style=\"color: #000000;\"><a name=\"IC9-21-11-8\"><\/a>IC 9-21-11-8<\/b><a style=\"color: #000000;\" name=\"IC9-21-11-8\"><\/a><br \/>\n<b>Bell or other audible signaling devices; sirens; whistles<br \/>\n<\/b>\u00a0Sec. 8. A person may not ride a bicycle unless the bicycle is equipped with a bell or other device capable of giving a signal audible for a distance of at least one hundred (100) feet. A bicycle may not be equipped with and a person may not use upon a bicycle a siren or whistle.<br \/>\n<i>As added by P.L.2-1991, SEC.9.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Making everyone mindful\u00a0that a bicycle is present is one of the most important defensive riding techniques one can employ. \u00a0If you don&#8217;t have a bell, I highly recommend purchasing one ASAP. \u00a0I personally use a Crane and find them to be amazing in their clarity and have a pleasant tone. \u00a0You can purchase them at <a href=\"http:\/\/virtuouscycles.us\/\">Virtuous Cycles<\/a> in Downtown Lafayette.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-N3Dq1Ydoa8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another disturbing aspect in Bangert&#8217;s article is the mentioning of Purdue&#8217;s recent plan suggestions (emphasis is mine). \u00a0If anyone has a full link to this report and\/or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Purdue is paying $150,000 to consultants\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #1990e5;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reasite.com\/\">Rundell Ernstberger Associates<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0of Muncie and\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #1990e5;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tooledesign.com\/\">Toole Design Group<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0of Silver Spring, Md., to develop an integrated bicycle master plan and make recommendations on commuter routes to and from campus. During a public meeting Thursday, the consultants outlined a number of suggestions, including <strong>possible &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Contraflow_lane\">contraflow<\/a>&#8221; lanes that would <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">allow cyclists to ride against traffic<\/span> on one-way streets<\/strong>, separated bike paths through and near campus, better designed intersections and curbs, and better driver and cyclist education campaigns. A lot of it, consultants repeatedly said, could be done, perhaps with just some paint, &#8220;on day one.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Creating\u00a0<em>contraflow<\/em> lanes is a myopic and foolhearted endeavor that will only lead to greater confusion and possibly disastrous cognitive dissonance. \u00a0I would be curious about the empirical data to back up this suggestion, especially in the context of Purdue.<\/p>\n<p>Our traffic system in #greaterlala is not that complicated. \u00a0It may be perceived as an inconvenience to ride a couple of streets over, but you are on a bicycle. \u00a0Pedal a bit.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, this is my path to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wlaf.lib.in.us\/\">West Lafayette Public Library<\/a>. \u00a0I avoid going the wrong way on Vine St.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Bike-Path-to-WLPL.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-386\" src=\"http:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Bike-Path-to-WLPL.jpg\" alt=\"Bike-Path-to-WLPL\" width=\"190\" height=\"436\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It appears, based on this and other suggestions, that we as a community wish to lower our standards for cycling by providing exceptions to the rules so people can ride in illogical and less predictable\u00a0ways.<\/p>\n<p>I have similar concerns over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/statestreetmasterplan\">State Street (Traffic) Master Plan<\/a>&#8216;s inclusion of bike lanes on campus. \u00a0Turn off the bike lane and you have to become a car again. \u00a0Enter downtown Lafayette and the same is true.<\/p>\n<p>Portions of the cycling community believe that since we\u00a0are not wrapped in metal and are powering ourselves\u00a0by way of our\u00a0own bodies, we\u00a0somehow elevate to the status of magical pedestrian, able to bend traffic rules and laws at will.<\/p>\n<p>These types of suggestions do nothing but prevent us from evolving into a predictable agent of travel, by whatever means we choose to transverse the land.<\/p>\n<p>Be mindful out there. \u00a0Use your bell. \u00a0When it&#8217;s dark, use your lights as well.<\/p>\n<p>Ride safe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In April 27th&#8217;s\u00a0Sunday paper, Dave Bangert writes\u00a0Drivers, cyclists and a mirror of shared blame, discussing\u00a0the recent APC study regarding bicycle crashes in Tippecanoe County from&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[48,78],"tags":[64,94,95],"class_list":["post-381","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-education-2","category-politics","tag-bikelala","tag-cycling","tag-mindfullness","entry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/381","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=381"}],"version-history":[{"count":8,"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/381\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":393,"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/381\/revisions\/393"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=381"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=381"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=381"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
