{"id":542,"date":"2014-10-08T12:08:23","date_gmt":"2014-10-08T12:08:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/?p=542"},"modified":"2014-10-08T12:11:52","modified_gmt":"2014-10-08T12:11:52","slug":"student-districts-in-west-lafayette-post-2014-redistricting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/2014\/10\/08\/student-districts-in-west-lafayette-post-2014-redistricting\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Districts in West Lafayette post-2014 Redistricting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There was a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/wbaa.org\/post\/could-west-lafayette-redistricting-include-seat-purdue-students\">WBAA news article<\/a> that talked about the recent redistricting (but failed to link to the <a title=\"West Lafayette Redistricting Map 2014-10-06\" href=\"http:\/\/www.westlafayette.in.gov\/egov\/docs\/1412624664_521728.pdf\">map<\/a>) and the opportunities for a student-only district.\u00a0 According to the article, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.purduesg.com\/\">Purdue student Vice President<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/haddix-mckinney.com\/\">Caroline McKinney <\/a>spoke with the City, inquiring about the possibility of allowing a student as a non-voting member of the Council to give a student&#8217;s perspective to City issues.<\/p>\n<p>As an aside, I will remind everyone that City Council meetings (among many others) are public meetings, providing a multitude of opportunities for engagement on an official and unofficial level.\u00a0 No need to get a non-voting seat to participate.\u00a0 In fact, I would argue, as citizens, we yield more power in certain contexts than elected officials.\u00a0 We will explore this further in our TEDxLafayette talk.<\/p>\n<p>With all of this interest and change in the City over recent months, I am still unsure how the new district map will play out in the election cycles to come.\u00a0 The first test being the 2015 municipal elections.<\/p>\n<p>If you look at the <a title=\"West Lafayette Redistricting Map 2014-10-06\" href=\"http:\/\/www.westlafayette.in.gov\/egov\/docs\/1412624664_521728.pdf\">redistricting map as of 2014-10-06<\/a>, you can see a decent amount of student population in Districts 1, 2, 3, 6.\u00a0 There are a lot of opportunities for students to live in District 4, and even less in in District 5.\u00a0 A precise number has not been calculated (I haven&#8217;t had the time), and I did ask the Council if they would provide such a spread.\u00a0 Nothing has been provided yet.<\/p>\n<p>If the students get their act together, they could easily gain a majority of seats with Districts 1, 2, 3, 6 and the three at-large seats available on the Council.\u00a0 They only need 5 seats to be in the majority.<\/p>\n<p>This next election cycle is going to be fascinating.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:\u00a0 How can we get community members involved in Purdue Student Government?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There was a recent WBAA news article that talked about the recent redistricting (but failed to link to the map) and the opportunities for a&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":543,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[30,78],"tags":[116,126,103,96],"class_list":["post-542","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-participatory-culture","category-politics","tag-redistricting","tag-student-districts","tag-wbaa","tag-west-lafayette","entry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/542","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=542"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/542\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":545,"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/542\/revisions\/545"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/543"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=542"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=542"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/zacharybaiel.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=542"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
